Deep Cleaning Like a Boss!

Deep cleaning, Yuck! Lets face it, deep cleaning sucks but once it is done my house feels soooooo amazing!!! Since having a baby I can tell you that I have gone through MANY phases in regards to cleaning. Initially our house was SPOTLESS! We massively cleaned the house before the baby came. We moved everything, vacuumed, cleaned the carpets, washed everything in the house that could go into the washing machine, we cleaned the garage, the front yard….EVERYTHING!

Next came the “clean all night” after work phase. Once I went back to work I came home every night and fought with the hard choice of cleaning or spending every moment with the baby since I was away from him all day while at work. I vacuumed daily since he was starting to roll and I didn’t want him to have a mouth full of dog hair. I dusted everything and did my best to attempt to keep my house as clean as we did while on maternity leave (hubby took the full 8 weeks off with me after Connor was born). I felt like I spent every waking moment either caring for the baby or cleaning or cooking and it wore on me quickly!

Next came the “I’m over it” phase. I gave up on cleaning after work. I would try to clean up a little bit here and there after work while making dinner or before bed but I found that most of the time I went to bed with the house a bigger mess than it was when I got home from work. This was not working!

Needless to say, it has taken me a long time to find a method that works for me. I found that I needed to do a massive cleaning session on the weekend and then just maintain  during the week. I run a load of laundry almost daily and then fold it the next day (most of the time) and I have to make sure I empty the dish washer in the morning or else I just don’t want to do it.

So….. Now onto the topic that you are all here for…….


Deep Cleaning Your Home Like a Boss!

1) Schedule your deep cleaning day! I know this may sound crazy but seriously, build it up in you mind, remind yourself why you want to do this, why it is important to you to have a clean house, and how WONDERFUL you’ll feel when you have accomplished it. This includes setting an alarm, getting up early and jumping in. Don’t, I repeat DON’T, get on your phone or turning on the TV!!!! You WILL end up sitting down and watching the TV or spending an hour scrolling through Facebook. 

2) Turn on upbeat music, open the blinds and windows if the weather is permitting. bedroom-1214335

This will help keep you working at a quicker pace and help with your energy level. It is proven that sunlight helps with your overall mood. If you are dedicated and energized you will accomplish everything you want to plus some.

3) Gather all of your laundry and put it in your laundry room or near your machines. laundry-basket-1637836

This is super important! The first thing you want to do is start a load of laundry, set an alarm on your phone to remind you to switch the laundry even if your machine has an alarm because your phone will require you to turn it off or snooze it. Stay on top of switching the loads, you will be surprised how much you can get done if you are running your machines the entire time you are cleaning. Don’t forget to pull all the towels, curtains, bedding, blankets on the back of the couch, or whatever else you have. Having fresh towels and bedding will make you feel wonderful after a long day of cleaning.  

4) Tidy up. Set a timer or pick a time and challenge yourself to get everything picked up quickly and put away. Consider using a basket to help collect items that need to go to another room.


Clean up the kids toys, put the dishes away that have been in the drying rack for the last few days. Once these things are quickly put away you can jump into what we are really here to do…..Deep clean. (If you can complete this step the day before I highly recommend doing that, it will make a world of difference while deep cleaning).

5) Pick your most “in need of attention” area and start there.


For me this is typically my kitchen or my master bedroom. Start at the top of the room and work your way down. Wipe down your ceiling fan/light fixture, wipe down the corners of the ceiling and wall, wipe down your walls (if desired), dust all furniture, vacuume/sweep/mop and clean the baseboards. When you do this remember that you can complete this quickly and still do a great job, you don’t have to spend more an hour per room to complete all these steps. Also, remember that if possible move the furniture and clean under/behind it.

6) Bathrooms.


When you get to the bathroom(s) I find it easiest if I put the cleaner in the toilet first thing, then spray down the shower and sink area. I clean up the bath toys, shampoo bottles, ect. after this if possible. Then I start at the top of the room and work my way down again.

I find that if I start with the room that is normally the worst that it motivates me to do the other rooms because 1) it looks so amazing and 2) because I know it wont take as long as the kitchen did (in my case). It also helps me keep it super clean for the days to come because it is simple to just keep up with the one little thing here and there compared to all the work I put in on my massive cleaning day.
