Tip of the week – Start every day off fresh!

Let’s face it, it’s late, you’re tired and all you want to do is go home from work or go to bed, but your desk or house is messy. What do you do???? If you’re like me you say “it can wait until tomorrow” but whenever I do this I feel very overwhelmed the next day. I walk into work knowing that my desk is full of crap, yes it’s important crap but still feels like crap because it’s only slightly organized, its piling high and almost tipping over and it makes me stress from the moment I walk in the door or even before that! I have been working on this and I found a few tricks that help me:

Start off each and every day fresh and with a plan!

When I take 5 minutes the night before to clean off my desk and organize my paperwork I feel so much more motivated and energized when I start my day. Here are a few steps to try to feel less stressed right off the bat:

  1. At the end of the day organize your next days tasks: This can look different for each person, so find a way that works best for you. I bought this daily planner that has helped me stay organized. At the end of each day I review what I had completed that day and what needs action still. If it needs my attention tomorrow then I transfer that task to the next day.
  2. Organize paperwork РThis all depends on the type of work you do. I deal with a LARGE amount of paperwork daily. I have tried many methods to keep it organized over the years but the only way that seems to work for me is to use a document sorter for paperwork that is ready to be filed. This keeps all those loose pieces of papers organized and ready to be filed as soon as I have a free moment and makes the pages easier to find if I need something before I get a chance to file it away.
  3. Use the “Action Priority Matrix” Action Priority MatrixThis chart can easily help you identify tasks that need to be done right now, need to be done asap but there are more important tasks ahead of it, tasks you can delegate or tasks that can be dumped or postponed until you can have a slow time at work.

By taking a few moments to organize, clean and prepare you can greatly decrease your stress of walking into an unorganized mess. By decreasing your stress you can start to focus on the things that really need you attention and energy and you will be one step closer to a stress free, simplified life.
